Color Games for Toddlers Part 5 — Colored Fishies!

1 Comment/ in Free Printables, Fun Activites at Home, Preschool and Teaching Ideas, Toddler Activities / by Kirstylee

What is a fishing game I can play with my toddler that will help with color recognition?

Colored Fishies! Okay, I know that this idea has been around forever, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? ;) This idea isn’t new, but I did add a fun little poem to help with color practice and to turn it into more of a game.

Free Printable! Color Games for Toddlers Part 4 - Colored Fishies - Moms Have Questions Too

To play this color game, you will need the following materials:

  • Colored fishies and colored “sand” mounds printable
  • Fishing pole
  • Paper bag (decorated as a boat, if desired)
  • Blue poster board, blanket, or large sheet of blue paper to represent water (optional)

To make the fishies and their colored sand mounds: print off these color fishies. If you don’t have a color printer, you can just cut fish shapes and circles out of colored construction paper or cardstock. If you want the fishies and sand mounds to be a bit more durable, cover them with contact paper or laminate them. Next, put 1-2 paperclips on each fish or staple each fish 2-3 times.

Free Printable! Color Games for Toddlers Part 4 - Colored Fishies - Moms Have Questions Too

To make the fishing pole, start with a plain pencil. Tie some yarn to the eraser end of the pencil. Make the “fishing line” as long as you want it, then cut the yarn. Get two small magnetic squares with a sticky back. Place the two magnetic squares on the very end of the yarn, with the sticky backs touching each other.

Now that your materials are ready, it’s time to play the game. We start by putting all of the “sand” mounds on a blue poster board so it looks like they are in the ocean. Then, we put the fishies in the ocean in random place. The fishies should not be on their sand mounds yet.

Next, have your child get ready with the paper bag next to him and with the fishing pole in his hand. Tell your child that he is going to try to catch some fishies and if he catches any, he can put them in the “boat” (paper bag).

Have your child point to the fish that he will try to catch with his fishing pole. Say this little poem:

A yellow (or whatever color your child chose) fish went out to play
He (or she) saw a hook and swam away.
Will the hook catch the fish?

Color Games for Toddlers Part 4 - Colored Fishies - Moms Have Questions Too

Now have your child move the fishing pole around to try to catch the fish, while you try to swim the fish back to the “sand” mound.

If your child catches the fish say:
The yellow fish says, “Oh no!”
And into the boat he will go.

If you get the fish back to the sand mound before your child catches it say:

The yellow fish is safe and sound,
He sits upon his sandy mound.

Color Games for Toddlers Part 4 - Colored Fishies - Moms Have Questions Too

Continue this game with all of the colored fishies until they are either in the paper bag or on the “sand” mound. If you want, count the number of fishies that your child caught.

Color Games for Toddlers Part 4 - Colored Fishies - Moms Have Questions Too

Next, switch places and have your child try to get the fishies back to their home before you catch them with the fishing pole.

This game is wonderful because you name the color of the fish two times during the rhyme. It is also great because your child has to color match when he is trying to put the fish on its sandy mound. If the fish goes on the wrong sand mound, he is not safe.

You could also use these fishies to play the traditional fishing game. To do this, put all of the fishies in the paper bag (or a box or a plastic tray, etc.). Have your child fish. When he catches a fish on the fishing pole, have him name the color of the fish. If he gets it right, he can put the fish to the side. If he gets it wrong, tell him the correct name and have him put it back in the paper bag. Continue until all the fishies are gone.

Snowflake Pattern Blocks Templates

8 Comments/ in Free Printables, Fun Activites at Home, Preschool Activities, Toddler Activities / by Kirstylee
January 4, 2013

What is a pre k activity or a toddler activity that uses pattern blocks templates?

I recently made these snowflake pattern blocks templates as part of a new “school” system I am going to do with Smiley Man. Since Smiley Man is still pretty young (20 months), I don’t think he will be able to use these pattern blocks templates the “regular” way. However, he loves to play with pattern blocks and he likes having a template to put the pieces on.

Snowflake Pattern Blocks Templates -- Moms Have Questions Too

I did make these templates specifically for Smiley Man, but they also make a great pre k activity. Little Bear loves working with pattern blocks templates and so do most preschoolers. I decided I should let Little Bear try them out and I am really glad that I did.

I have been teaching Little Bear that every snowflake is unique. He didn’t believe that could be true, so I was able to pull out these snowflake pattern blocks templates at just the right time. I showed him how they all have the shape of snowflakes, but they all look different. He was fascinated.

Since Little Bear loved these snowflake pattern blocks templates so much, I decided to do a few extension activities with them. First, I had him make one of the snowflakes on a template by looking at the template and putting the pieces on a table, rather than straight onto the pattern blocks template.

Then, I had him trace all of the individual pieces. I showed him that he just made his own template for pattern blocks. He thought that was really cool.

Next, I had him make his own unique snowflake. We talked about how it had to have 6 points. Little Bear was really excited about this and enjoyed making his own snowflake.

Once he made a snowflake that he liked, he traced all the pieces. Then, he gave me the new snowflake pattern blocks template that he made and I had to put the pattern blocks on in the right place.

Finally, Little Bear colored the new pattern blocks template. He loved these extension activities. I think there will be more pattern block activities for us in the future. I am so glad these pattern blocks templates turned out to be such a fabulous pre k activity. I know Smiley Man will also love playing with these templates when it is his turn, but I am glad that I let Little Bear play with them and I am extra glad that we found so many extension activities. These snowflake pattern blocks templates are sure to bring your toddler and your preschooler lots of fun.

New Year’s Resolutions for Kids

0 Comments/ in Free Printables, Fun Activites at Home, Holiday, New Year's Eve, Preschool Activities, Preschool and Teaching Ideas / by Kirstylee
January 1, 2013

What kinds of New Year’s resolutions should my preschooler set?

My new year’s resolutions this year are to lose weight and save money. Just kidding. ;) Those are the classic new year’s resolutions that have turned resolutions in general into a joke. It seems like every year people say the same thing and every year, they do nothing about it. Truth be told, I’m happy about my weight and I’m already pretty good at saving money. I also have some new year’s resolutions, but they are not as general as losing weight and saving money.

My new year’s resolutions are much more attainable because they are specific and realistic. For example, here is one of my resolutions: Start tot school with Smiley Man and teach him all the shapes and colors by the end of the year. Here is another resolution of mine: Have a garden with at least 3 types of vegetables and harvest and least 2 of the vegetables. See the difference?

New Year's Resolutions for Kids -- Moms Have Questions Too

I think that New Year’s resolutions for kids, and goal setting in general, is very beneficial. I also think it is important to start teaching Little Bear how to set realistic, specific, and attainable goals. Put those three things together and what do you get? A New Year’s Resolution printable for kids, of course!

I made this printable so I could help Little Bear set some goals. I wanted to teach him to set specific goals so I targeted three areas of his life that he could set goals for. Life, Home, and Fun. I might even have him make a goal for church, too.

New Year's Resolutions for Kids -- Moms Have Questions Too

Even though I will help Little Bear make some new year’s resolutions, these resolutions will not be a joke. I want to teach Little Bear that goal setting doesn’t just include writing the goal down. I will talk with Little Bear about steps he can take to accomplish the goals that he has set. I might even write a few of the steps on the back of the paper so that he can remember them better. Last of all, I will have Little Bear choose a place to hang his New Year’s resolutions paper so that it is prominent. I want him to remember his goals throughout the year so that he remembers to keep working on them.

Making new year’s resolutions for kids or adults can be a joke or it can be very beneficial. If you are making new year’s resolutions with your child, don’t forget to print off this New Year’s Resolutions for Kids printable. Just remember to set realistic, specific, and attainable goals. :)

Color Games for Toddlers Part 3 — Paint Chip Matching

1 Comment/ in Fun Activites at Home, Preschool and Teaching Ideas, Toddler Activities / by Kirstylee
December 28, 2012

What is a color game using paint chips that I can play with my toddler?

If you haven’t seen them already, this is part three of our Color Games for Toddlers Series. Normally they will be posted on Thursdays but with the holiday this week today’s post is a day off.

Paint chips seem to be inspiration for everything these days. I have seen them used for cutting practice, paint chip coasters, paint chip calendar, paint chip baby mobile, paint chip art and paint chip matchbook notebooks. Today I am going to show you how to use them for a color game for toddlers.

I started with the paint chips that have 4 colors on them. Choose 7-10 different paint chips, all with different colors. I chose red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and brown.

You only need to have two squares for each color. I chose the bottom two squares for each color. Cut out the two squares for each color and put them aside. Don’t forget to recycle the extra squares using any of the ideas above. I’ll probably have Little Bear use them for cutting practice, and then maybe I’ll make a calendar with them.Color Games for Toddlers Paint Chip Matching -- Moms Have Questions Too

Next, I laminated the squares that I was going to use. I have a Scotch laminator that I bought for $30. I bought lamination packets from Sam’s Club (200 sheets for $20), but you can also buy Scotch lamination sheets (100 sheets for $15) which is still a pretty great deal. Of course, laminating is purely optional, but with two messy boys, it sure is nice to have have my activities laminated.

Now you will need to find an object to stick half of the squares to. I used a shoe box lid because we had one lying around, but really, any sturdy surface will do. Choose which squares you want on the sturdy surface (the lighter shades or the darker shades). I chose to put the lighter shades onto the shoe box lid. I glued them on using a hot glue gun.

Once that is complete, you can add some Velcro to the top of the squares that are on your sturdy surface, and onto the back of the other squares. I opted not to do this because I don’t currently have any Velcro on hand. I think I may go back and add some though because it is hard for Smiley Man to make a match when using something as slippery as laminated paint chips. You could also add magnets instead of Velcro, but if you do, be sure to supervise your child while they are playing this game. Magnets are very dangerous if swallowed.

Color Games for Toddlers Paint Chip Matching -- Moms Have Questions Too

To play the game, set the shoe box lid covered with paint chip squares in front of your child (or on their lap). Point to each color and name it. If your child is learning the color names or knows the color names, have him say the names with you.

Next, pick up one loose square at a time. Name it (or have your child name it), then have them place it on top of the same color square that is on the shoe box lid. You may or may not decide to talk about how the colors are not exactly the same shade, but they are still the same color.

To store this game, put all the loose squares into a ziplock bag or an envelope and staple it to the back of the shoe box lid.

New Year’s Eve Traditions and Fun Things to Do

4 Comments/ in Fun Activites at Home, Holiday, New Year's Eve / by Cassidy
December 26, 2012

Where can I find ideas for New Year’s Eve Celebrations? What are some fun New Year’s Eve traditions?

On Friday we will share a post about New Years Eve Celebrations for kids. There will be several ideas for celebrating New Year’s with kids. If you are looking for even more New Year’s Eve ideas for kids or just New Year’s Eve ideas in general, check out these great links. Also, I’ll tell you a little about some of our New Year’s Eve traditions!

New Years Eve Balloon Party -- Moms Have Questions Too

Cassidy’s New Year’s Eve Traditions for Children and Adults

For several years my extended family (who all live within 30 minutes of each other, except for one family) would get together and party on New Year’s Eve. To make the night a little more exciting, and less stressful, we would do a rotating party. At each aunt or uncle’s house we would have a small treat or appetizer as well as do an activity. The night started around 8:00 and we usually went to 3 or 4 houses. We generally ended up at my parents house to watch the ball drop.

One of our favorite activities is to play dodge ball. Our church has a large open court that we are able to use. We line all of the balls (very soft and kid friendly, but still fun for adults too) along the middle, someone yells go and then we run for the balls. It is fun because the adults and kids can play together. We also mix it up and do adults vs kids, boys vs girls, even birthday months vs odd birthday months, Alpine and Cedar Hills vs Lindon, and anything else we can think of to have a good mix of people for the teams.

Some of our other activities have included:

  • Card Games
  • Trivia Games
  • Musical Chairs
  • Cake Walk (or something similar)
  • Pool Tournaments
  • Around the World Ping Pong
  • Foosball Tournaments
  • Air Hockey Tournaments
  • Karaoke
  • Dance Offs and a Dance Party
  • Minute to Win It (or similar games)

I think you probably get the idea. It’s nice to rotate between houses so that one person doesn’t feel like they have to entertain everyone the whole night and they only have to do a small amount of food. Also, we can start the party early because there are so many fun things to do!

One of the highlights of New Year’s Eve though is my dad’s obsession with balloons. We haven’t done this every year, but we have done it a lot. My dad will blow up hundreds of balloons (with a pump…) and fill our “big room” with them. Usually we just have a bunch of balloons on the floor. Last year though he even did helium balloons so the floor and ceiling were covered. He and my sister also made some balloon animals as well to make things more interesting. The kids (and adults) really love it! Then when the clock strikes midnight (as we watch the ball drop) everyone starts popping the balloons. It’s loud and fun! I think this is among my favorite New Year’s Eve traditions and I know all the kids really like it too!
